Six Sigma Certification May be A Possible Solution.

In this down turn economy there are alot of companies downsizing or just trying to cut costs. One field that may be in demand is the Six Sigma Engineer who sole pupose in life is to develop cost cutting projects without cutting employee jobs. This is done by looking at a companies processes and finding out where they can be made more efficient and eliminate excess waste form the whole end to end processes using the six sigma practices. Projects are designed and executed by Six Sigma teams usually one black belt graduate who manages green belt certified graduates.

My advice is to better yourself now while you have time and maybe a certification will make the decision at your next interview.
